Psychoeducation for children

We offer psychoeducation for children and adults. Psychoeducation is a collaborative process where parents as well as children learn to understand and handle psychological challenges.

We offer psychoeducation in person and online.

What is psychoeducation for children and adolescents?

Psychological and psychiatric psychoeducation for children and adolescents describes a process in which children learn about psychological mechanisms and how they can be managed. It is relevant when the child has been diagnosed, has special needs or is in a vulnerable psychological position.

Psychoeducation differs from psychotherapy because it is of limited time and places greater focus on learning about psychological mechanisms, rather than having the child or adolescent share all of their difficult experiences.

The educational approach is adapted to the child’s age and may involve games and creative activities to help the child understand complex topics more easily. The pedagogical goal is to create a safe environment in which the child can ask questions, express feelings, and learn strategies to cope with challenges.

Often, the family is involved when the child is younger. Working together in a psychoeducational setting gives the family a shared frame of reference and tools to rely on when psychological and emotional difficulties arise.

Benefits of psychoeducation for children

  • Increased self-understanding: Children learn how their brain processes different emotional and cognitive impressions and actions.
  • Enhanced self-esteem: Understanding underlying psychological mechanisms of their emotions and behaviours, reduces self-blame. The child learns that their difficulties are neither unique nor insurmountable. This awareness fosters a sense of normalcy, encourages self-compassion, and ultimately contributing to enhanced self-esteem and resilience.
  • Coping strategies: The child learns how to cope with a variety of challenging situations and and explores the effects of various coping strategies. This might involve concrete challenges from school, home, or among friends.
  • Better family dynamics: Parents and siblings gain insight into the child’s functioning, special needs, and how best to support them.
  • Normalization and acceptance: Psychoeducation helps normalize the child’s experiences and reduce feelings of shame or isolation.

Topics in psychoeducation for children

Psychoeducation can be adapted to a range of diagnoses and special needs. Below are examples of the programs we offer:

  • ADHD and ADD: Explanation of what ADHD and ADD are, and how they affect attention and energy. Strategies for managing restlessness and concentration difficulties. How to use structure and routines to create calm in daily life.
  • Anxiety: Understanding what anxiety is and how it feels in the body. Learning techniques to manage it in the short term as well as long term. It includes exercises the child can practice between sessions.
  • Autism: Understanding what autism is and how it can affect social situations and sensory experiences. Learning strategies to manage overstimulation and changes. Understanding strengths and interests.
  • Self-esteem: Learning how a child can build “high” self-esteem together with the experienced vulnerability.
  • High intelligence and giftedness: If your child has tested as highly gifted, they learn how high intelligence can be both a strength and a challenge. Managing perfectionism and the feeling of being different. How to balance intellectual interests with social relationships.
  • Serious medical conditions: Explaining how illness can also affect our mental well-being. How to handle feelings such as uncertainty, fear, anger, or sadness. Support in navigating treatments and hospital visits.

How is psychoeducation for children organised?

We organise psychoeducation for children over the course of four sessions. Between sessions, the child has the opportunity to try out new strategies and bring questions.

Psychoeducation is conducted as individual sessions, giving the child a good opportunity to ask questions and learn at their own pace.

Depending on the child’s age, parents and possibly siblings will participate. This provides the best opportunity for the family to support the child in everyday life.

What is the cost of psychoeducation for children?

Psychoeducation for children consists of one 60-minute session and three 45-minute sessions. You can find our price list here.
